Free Cycle Security Marking Event

Posted: 26th Aug 2008

Cyclists in Hethersett are being offered free security advice at a special cycle marking event on Saturday August 30th.

The event will give both adults and children the opportunity to pump up their cycle security for the summer months, a period which historically sees an increase in cycle thefts.

There has been a small amount of cycles stolen in the Hethersett area in the past few weeks, which the Hethersett and Mulbarton Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is proactively investigating this spate of crime to recover the stolen bikes.

Hethersett and Mulbarton SNT Sgt Chris Claydon said: "The bicycle marking event is a great opportunity for cyclists to increase their knowledge on cycle security and help prevent their cycles from being stolen. Taking a few basic security measures may help deter an opportunist thief."

The cycle marking event will be held in the Hethersett Library car park between 10.00am-13.00pm.

Useful crime prevention tips for cycle owners:

  • Have a good quality lock for your bicycle - "D locks" are often the most effective.
  • Use a lock to secure the bike-stand, wheel rim and frame together - making it more difficult for a thief to take.
  • Never leave your cycle unlocked in a public place - leaving your bicycle unattended even for a minute can mean it is gone when you return.
  • Find a suitable location to leave and secure your cycle - dark alleys, drain-pipes and posts are all best avoided.
  • Get your bike security marked by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team or crime prevention officer - making it readily identifiable should it be recovered.
  • Overnight, and if there is room, inside the home is the most secure location to store your bike. Bikes kept in garages and sheds in particular should be properly secured.

If anyone has any information in relation to cycle thefts in the area please contact Hethersett and Mulbarton SNT on 0845 456 4567 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
